Historical studies show that the Greeks and Romans prided themselves in the realistic depiction of food in artworks. Since then and up to the present, people tried to improve the image of the food. Before the invention of photography, the food has been painted by many famous painters, becoming a subject of the art. Also, in time the people have understood that the look of a meal can have the effect of appetite stimulation or depression, it can result in joy or total depression.
The concept of Culinary Photography has been assimilated once with the introduction in 1936 of the first Michelin Guide of Fine Dining. From this moment, the gastronomy manages to express themselves through photography. Culinary Photography is a type of photography which is addressed to culinary aesthetics. It is a specialization of Culinary Arts. Today, this type of photography is associated as a form of fine art. In time, this discipline has evolved, assimilating scientific concepts and the principles of exact sciences. It is noted that at this moment, The Culinary Photography uses the concepts of cognitive psychology, non-verbal languages and principles of physics.
Culinary Photography is not Food Photography. There are major differences between the two types of photography. While the Culinary Photography is addressed to culinary aesthetics and the services of hospitality, the Food Photography is a specialization of commercial photography. If in food photography, the final aim is to determine the client’s to buy that product, in culinary photography the ultimate goal is to interact with the clients.

Culinary photography requires the understanding of light, camera angles and lens selection- and how they can all be used to enhance the look of the food. It often requires a team of people following a creative process to ensure that the perfect shot is created.
Also, in Culinary Photography for a perfect food shot, we need to keep in mind sometimes that before to take the picture, we have to realize some drawings regarding the message of photography.
For this reason, in most cases, the photographer interacts with typography and other design elements. Creating these concept sketches is key to the development of the shot we want because it is in this early stage that we are able envision how it will look like, before the photography is actually taken. Once finalized, these sketches, along with our visual reference images are presented to the client and photographer, and important step to ensure both client and photographer are able to understand what we envision for the shot.
